Abortion

The pro-abortionist would like to frame the abortion issue as a religious issue. But it is not. It is a human rights issue. It is our most fundamental right, the right to life! There are even atheists who are against abortion! See:

True, many religious people, especially Catholics, are pro-life. But that is because they believe that all life is sacred since all human beings are made in the image of God. The Church was against slavery back in the 1800’s. But no one says that opposing slavery is strictly a religious issue. When the Reverend Jessie Jackson marches for civil rights, but no one cries out that this is a violation of separation of church and state! Only if they oppose you do they tell you that you should keep you religious beliefs to yourself.

A common motto among the pro-abortion crowd is that if you do not like abortion, then just do not get one. But that could have also been said in the 1800’s, when we had slavery – if you do not like slavery, then just don’t have one. During Nazi Germany, they could have said that if you are against Jews being imprisoned, then just do not imprison one yourself. This is a common ploy against any activism for the oppressed – just shut up! No one is asking you to oppress anyone! Just leave us alone to keep our slaves and imprison  the Jews! It’s not hurting you! So stop trying to oppose your values on us!

But if we did not protest then we would still have slavery today. African-Americans today would still be treated as secondary citizens. Our country has a rich heritage of people standing up and protesting against the oppressed. And when you protest you are imposing your values on others. And no one is more oppressed today that the unborn child. Since Roe v Wade in 1973, we have killed more unborn children than all the people who have died in all our wars. One in 4 pregnancies end in an abortion.

Some say that they are personally opposed to abortion but they do not believe in imposing their values on someone else. But that makes no sense at all! This position either goes too far or not enough. Either the fetus is a human being or it is just a blob of tissue. If it is a human being then this opening statement does not go far enough. If the fetus is a human being, then abortion is murder. And if it is murder, then it is ridiculous to say that you will not speak out against murder because you do not want to impose your values on someone else. If it is just a blob of tissue, then why be personally opposed to it? That is like saying that you are personally opposed to an appendectomy. If it is just a blob of tissue, then it is just a simple medical procedure to remove it. No one is morally squeamish about getting his tonsils removed!

Bill Clinton said that he wanted to make abortions rare but keep them legal. Again, this it a copout! It the fetus is not a human being, why bother to make abortions rare? Does anybody bother about making appendectomies rare? But if the fetus is a human being, then the killing of the fetus is murder. Since when are we content as a goal to keep murder rare but legal?

The pro-abortion crowd wants to frame this as a women’s rights issue. A woman has a right to do what she wants to her body. But freedom is only allowed as long my freedom does not hurt or kill someone else. That is the issue! Is there another human being inside her? If so, then her freedom only extends to the point that she does not hurt or kill that other human being. We say that human life began at conception, so at the point of conception, that is when life should be protected.

The pro-abortion crowd would then say that no one knows for sure when life begins. Notice that they do not say that life does not start at conception. They do not even say when human life does begin. Does it begin at viability? Does it begin at birth? Does it begin when the baby is a year old? They never tell us exactly when it passes from non-human to human. They just say that no one knows for sure. But even if we are not sure, should we not err on the side of protecting human life? Suppose a man sees some rustling in his bushes. Just in case that it may be a coyote, he gets out his gun and shoots at the bush. Would that not be reckless? He does not know that a coyote is in the bushes. For all he knows, it could have been a small child! Should he not refrain from shooting in the bushes until he knows for sure what is there? In the same way, if we are not sure if what is inside the mother is a human being, should we not protect it until we know for sure? But instead, the pro-abortion crowd is saying to us that when in doubt, kill it!

Another red-herring is throwing out the rape-and-incest argument. They say we must have abortions legal for the sake of rape and incest. But in reality, of all the abortions we have, very few of them are because of rape and incest. If this was really the motive, why then not limit abortion to  only those cases? But the pro-abortion are against this. They want to keep abortion legal for any reason, which shows this is just a red-herring.

I became pro-life back in 1973, right after the Supreme Court’s legalizing it. I was in college, and I decided to write a paper on this issue. I read every book I could find, both pro and con. I found that the pro-abortion group never tried to even respond to the arguments by those who were against it. The pro-abortion group only repeated the mantra that a woman has a right to her own body. The pro-life group brought up the real issue – when does life begin. They would bring up the development of the unborn child. They would bring up that brain waves are present within 42 days after conception (see http://www.prolife.com/FETALDEV.html). If we define the end of life as the absence of brain waves, then should we not define the beginning of life to be the the presence of brain waves? Also, scientific experiments have shown that very early in the first trimester the unborn child can feel pain .

"Real time ultrasonography, fetoscopy, study of the fetal EKG (electrocardiogram) and fetal EEG (electroencephalogram) have demonstrated the remarkable responsiveness of the human fetus to pain, touch, and sound. That the fetus responds to changes in light intensity within the womb, to heat, to cold, and to taste (by altering the chemical nature of the fluid swallowed by the fetus) has been exquisitely documented in the pioneering work of the late Sir William Lily — the father of fetology."

This child is feeling the torture when it is being cut out its mother’s womb! Our society has more compassion on the water-boarding of terrorists than the torture of innocent pre-born children! The fetus feels pain independently of the mother, which shows again that this is human life. A piece of mere tissue does not feel pain independently of its hosting organism.

The abortion industry will argue that this is all lies. They will produce their own “experts” to say that the fetus feels no pain. But you must remember that the abortion industry is a trillion dollar industry. How can one expect objectivity from them? And as I argued beforehand, when in doubt, we should err on the side of human life.

Last of all, I saw the pictures! I saw the pictures of the development of the human fetus. I saw how the fetus gradually morphs into a newborn baby. There was no one point in time that I could see a clear starting point from the appearance of non-human to human. Unless human life begins at conception it is impossible to find exactly when human life begins – even after birth. This is why Dr. James Watson, a pro-abortion advocate and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, advocated that we do not define the beginning of human life until 3 days AFTER BIRTH! (http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0286-24233405_ITM). This way a parent can take the baby home with them and see if they like it. If they don’t like it, they can bring it back to the clinic to have it aborted.

Then I saw those pictures of aborted fetuses. Pro-abortion advocates object to the use of the pictures – being too gruesome and disgusting. But again, why should anyone feel that way if the fetus is nothing but a blob of human tissue? I once watched on public television an open heart operation. No one thought that was disgusting! If the fetus is just a blob of human tissue, then why not show pictures of it being taken out? Why not just treat at as another medical procedure? We should even see the abortion procedure on public television! But the pro-abortion crowd wants to keep these procedures to be done behind closed doors. They know that if the public really saw what was happening in those clinics then they would want those abortion mills closed. The pro-aborts say that these pictures are fakes. But yet they still refuse to open the doors to the public and let the public see what happens at an abortion. See the following for pictures:

The pro-aborts say that they are all for the women. But they are lying. If they are for women, why is the abortion industry the only non-regulated industry in the medical field? I am now a computer programmer for a pharmaceutical company. Being part of the medical field, this company must document all procedures and the company is regularly audited by the government. The motto is “If it is not document then it was not done”. But the abortion industry has successfully lobbied Congress to be exempt from any government auditing. So the abortion clinic does not even need to document that they are sterilizing the equipment. If they are not documenting, we should assume it is not getting done. Advocates for abortion say that we need to legalize abortion in order to get rid if back-alley abortions. But all they did was to legalize back-alley abortions. There is no reason to think that abortions are not any safer now. We do not know how many women die from botched abortions because the abortion industry is not required to make those records public. The abortion clinic is a black box. What goes on inside no one knows, not even the government. When a woman is having serious trouble, the ambulance takes her quickly and quietly to the hospital. She dies in the hospital. Rarely does she die in the clinic.

If the pro-abortion group is for the free choice of women, why do they fight against the requirement that the abortion clinic must provide full information to their patients before the abortion? There were bills that forced the clinics to give information of the development of the fetus, or pictures of ultra-sound, or information of the possible negative physical and emotional consequences before the woman makes the decision. These bills were successfully defeated by the pro-abortion lobby. But why? Would not a choice that is well-informed be the best thing for the woman? Should not the woman know that an abortion increases her chances of breast cancer? Should not the woman know of the possibility of her being suicidal later? Should she not know that she increases the chances of suffering from severe depression later on in life? Should she not know that the abortion would increase the chances that she would split from her husband or boyfriend?

The abortion industry says that the pro-lifers have ulterior motives for wanting to inform women, knowing that this would lower abortions. But is that not an admission of guilt from the abortion industry? Are they not then admitting that the more informed women are, the less likely they are to get an abortion? They then say that this the pro-life group wants to brainwash the women with misinformation. But we pro-lifers would be content just to force the women to see ultrasound pictures of fetal development pictures. Surely there can be no way to give misinformation on that! Also, as I said before, all the abortion industry has to do is open their doors to the media and let us see for ourselves. But the abortion industry refuses to so so.

There is a Catholic organization called Rachel’s Vinyards. This organization helps women who had abortion and now suffer from these problems. They help thousands of people every year. This organization would not be in existence if none of these things were true. I know that the abortion industry would argue that these are all false. But again, if they want to contest this, all they have to do is open the records to the public. Let us have an independent study on the effects of abortion on the women who have them. But the pro-abortion crown does not want an informed choice.

If the pro-abortion crowd is really for women’s choice, then why do they not speak out against China? How come NOW does not speak out against China forcing women to have abortions? Why do they not defend a woman’s right NOT to have an abortion? Even in this country, many women are forced to get an abortion. Women are pressured by their boyfriends, their husbands, and their parents to get an abortion. NOW is strangely silent about this.

Young girls under 18 are allowed to get an abortion without the parents’ knowledge or consent. There is no age limit when an abortion will not be performed. A girl as young as twelve can walk into a clinic and get an abortion. A girl that age cannot get her ears pierced without her parent’s consent! Pro-abortion people argue that this necessary since the girl may then be abused by her parents. But would it not more help the girl than hurt her? What if the girl has something in her medical history that the doctors needed to be aware of before they give her the abortion? Would it not be in the interest of the girl for the clinic to interview the parents? Also, statistics show that the younger the girl is when she became pregnant, the more likely it is that the girl had sex with an adult male. That would make it statutory rape! So should not the clinic be required to notify the parents and the authorities to ensure that a crime was not committed? But this is not the case now. As said before, the abortion industry is non-regulated. So a 30+ aged male can drop off his under-aged girlfriend to an abortion-clinic and the clinic can give her an abortion that in effect covers up the man’s crime. In fact this is exactly what is happening. There are taped recordings of undercover women posing as under-aged girls impregnated by adult men, and the abortion clinic employee were willing to keep this from the authorities, even though it is against the law to do so (http://www.childpredators.com/).

Throughout this article, I never quoted from the Bible or the Church. Abortion is not a religious issue. It is a human rights issue. It is the right of every human being to live. This takes precedence for any other right. No one has a right to do what he wants with his or her body if that means the killing of someone else. The right to life is more important than a right not to be inconvenienced. But it is also a women’s right issue. Women have a right to be informed of the complications that can happen later on, both physically and emotionally. The parents have the right to know and to consent to a very dangerous procedure on their under-aged daughter.

Even when I was not as religious as I am now, I was always pro-life. My religious faith did not have to teach me that I needed to be pro-life. Science did that! Logic did that! The pictures did that! What my faith told me is that I must do something about it. Because I am a Catholic, I believe I will be judged by what I do, not just by what I know. God is not just impressed with my believing that life begins at conception. I must do something about it. I must pray for the end of abortion. I must pray and protest in front of abortion clinics, or at least do something else. I must tell others about the atrocity of abortion. I must vote for those who pledge to end this atrocity.

This is not imposing my values on others. It is defending the weakest among us. It is the defending the right of the unborn child to live a full life.
